“Half my life I’ve been Captain Beany… and I’ll tell you what, it’s the greatest feeling going”
Captain Beany is the alter ego of Barry Kirk, a 64 year old man living in a small town in South Wales. Thirty years ago, Barry took the most ordinary household item, a tin of baked beans, and turned it into his own extraordinary alternative reality.
ENVY Colourist Andrew Cloke said: “This was an incredibly fun short film/documentary to work on. The piece was shot like a drama, using Cashback and 1 hour photo for aesthetic referencing and delivers a feel similar to that of a scripted short.
The objective was to create a filmic look and to deliver a quirky British aesthetic. To achieve this I used some film grain and built a custom LUT to restrict the colour palette, enabling me to ensure a consistent and unified grade. I used the Baselight paint tool to duplicate elements and deliver a consistent and uniform background setting. Additionally I punched colours to highlight Captain Beany and make the film more vibrant however I insured they remained reigned in so not to become overpowering or give an unrealistic representation.
